DESCRIPTION:This course is conducted at the shooting range and takes approximately four hours. There is no written examination, but the shooter must pass the minimum required score with the firearm as they are approved to carry. The course must be completed every four to six months per the BSIS requirements.
Applicants with a current firearm permit who are completing their semi annual range re-qualifications are not required to attend the academic portion of the training (Day 1). They are only required to complete the two-hour refresher course on Day 2 and successfully complete the Proficiency qualification.
Applicants with a current firearm permit who are completing their fourth semi-annual range re-qualification for the purpose of renewing a firearm permit must attend BOTH the academic portion of the training (Day 1) and the range re-qualification proficiency exam (Day 2).
Firearm permits expire two years from the date of issuance. Applicants must re-qualify four times during the life of the permit: twice during the first year after the date of issuance, and twice during the second year. Re-qualifications must be at least four months apart. The application for renewal should be submitted to the Bureau 60 days before the firearms permit expires. The current fee for renewing a firearm permit is $98.00. If you have allowed your firearms permit to expire you may not renew it and must re-apply as if it were your initial application for the firearms permit.
The Firearm Permit Renewal Course requires the permit holder to complete a two (2) hour Escalation of Force lecture.The officer must then take and pass the written examination prior to attending the range qualification. The officer must qualify at the range with each of the weapons they have listed on their permit.
TO ATTEND THIS COURSE, YOU MUST PROVIDE YOUR OWN FIREARM AND AMMUNITION, which is conducted at a local firing range.
